The course begins with emphasis on general conditions and progresses to masonry, block, and concrete construction. Steel framing, roofing systems, exterior walls and sprinkler systems are covered. Electrical, plumbing, HVAC, lighting, motors, closed-circuit TV, alarm systems and switchboards are discussed.
Throughout the course, students are introduced to damageability and repairability of all the structural components and mechanical systems. The National Construction Estimator is used as a reference for labor and material calculations.
Demolition, debris removal, hazardous wastes, and temporary protection are covered. Time and material, as well as unit costs, are reviewed and calculated as part of the estimating exercises that are assigned. The role of engineers, plant managers and construction companies is also discussed.
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will have the basic knowledge to estimate and manage claims involving structural damage to commercial buildings.
